Please help me figure out what this is! Watch this video! It looks like a Massive Super-Volcano or a Huge Comet Impact on Jupiter!! The 4 Moons of Jupiter as they appear in these photos from left to right are Europa, Io, Ganymede, and Callisto.

This is the very creepy. The night that I took these photos, Earth eclipses Jupiter in our solar system. The Sun, Earth and Jupiter are lined up at the exact time that this photo was taken!! Guess when the last time this alignment happened?? It was December 21, 2012!! If you remember, that was the day the world was supposed to end!! Or, it was regarded as the end-date of a 5,126-year-long cycle in the Mayan Long Count calendar. You can see this alignment for yourself in a real time model of our Solar System. Just go to: http://www.planetsofthesolarsystem.net/solar-system-model.html

Look at the model of our Solar System on the following dates:
December 21, 2012 - The End of the World.
January 22, 2014 - The day I took the photo of Jupiter exploding!!
February 23, 2015 - Roughly the next time this alignment happens.

Everybody with a telescope should be watching Jupiter. Especially on February 23, 2015!!

These are the dates that Jupiter is at opposition. This is when the Sun, Earth and Jupiter are perfectly aligned.
December 2, 2012 - January 5, 2014 - February 6, 2015

The photos were taken from the West side of Guelph, Ontario. Which is 90km West of Toronto. I used an Orion Apex 90mm Maksutov-Cassegrain Telescope. The photos were taken from indoors through double pane window glass. I had a generic Zoom Eyepiece in the telescope and I had my Canon L20 point and click camera strapped to the eyepiece. The mount is not motorized so all these photos are taken from a stationary telescope, and the exposure times are about .5 seconds to 1 second for most of these pictures. These photos were taken on January 22, 2014 at approximately 2:17 a.m. EST (in the video I accidentally wrote GMT, should have been EST). So they were taken between 2:00 a.m. and 3:00 a.m. from Guelph, Ontario and looking out over the West Coast of Canada. You may be able to figure out the exact time using the Sky and Telescope website. They have a Jupiter's Moons Simulator / Javascript Utility.

Don't forget about Shoemaker-Levy 9, the Comet that hit Jupiter in 1994. Some of the impacts from that Comet caused Earth sized fireballs!! "These events were critical in demonstrating the conception of Jupiter as a “cosmic vacuum cleaner,” a body that attracts objects away from the inner solar system. Because of its sheer mass and location, Jupiter would be well-suited to pulling asteroids, meteors, and comets such as Shoemaker-Levy 9 away from any chance of meeting the Earth. Some scientists speculate that the number of extinction events on Earth due to impacts has been significantly reduced by Jupiter’s influence. However, a debate remains as to whether Jupiter pulls more of these objects than it blocks towards the Earth with its gravity." (TheVarsity.ca)

Check out this cool Shoemaker-Levy 9 Animation video that shows what a massive impact on Jupiter might look like! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HXgq3Iq4wOk

Please let me know what you think this is in my photo! If it was an explosion of some kind, it would appear that it was 2 to 4 times the size of planet Earth!!! Which I would rather not believe... so I would like to think that this is just a reflection in the window or in the telescope. Or maybe just glare from the bright planet / over-exposure on the camera sensor. Whatever it is, it looks pretty strange!!!

You can also see the Doppler Effect in these photos. The spin of Jupiter effects the way that the light travels to Earth and is observed by us. The effect is seen in these photos by observing the Blue-Shift in the light on left side of Jupiter, the side of the planet that is rotating towards you. The other side of the planet shows Red-Shift in the light because that side of the planet is rotating away from you. This is one of the ways that scientists can measure the rotational velocity of a planet.

So some of the strange light around the planet can be 'easily' explained, but I don't know what to think of the 'Super-Volcano' picture that I got!! Maybe it was a Super-Comet that hit Jupiter and it has a twin that is on its' way towards Earth!! Or maybe it's Alien Technology!! Like we don't have enough Nukes and Missles on Earth, All of them: Ready to pounce at the touch of a button
My system locked in on military gluttons
I rule on land, air and sea
Pass judgement on humanity
Winds blow from the bowels of hell
Will we give warning, only time will tell
Satan rears his ugly head, to spit into the wind

Rust in Peace... Polaris by Megadeth!!!
