U.S. Bombers Are Flying Over Europe, Baiting the Russian Bear

The United States Air Force has deployed six B-52H bombers to Europe, where the heavy strategic bombers are conducting exercises that take them close to Russia. The exercise appears to be a tit-for-tat gesture for recent Russian bomber flights in the Arctic near Alaska. Russian fighter jets have performed intercepts of the bombers as they fly over international airspace, with Moscow posting the videos on social media.

Over the last week, the six aircraft detachment has been very busy, flying a number of training missions to the Norwegian Sea, the Baltic Sea, Estonia, the Mediterranean Sea and Greece. Many of these areas are relatively close to Russian airspace. Although the Air Force has not publicized exact flight routes of training flights, open source intelligence analysts have figured out some details.

The B-52H bomber was built in the early 1960s and today 76 of them still serve with the U.S. Air Force’s Global Strike Command. The B-52H can carry conventional munitions, including satellite-guided bombs, anti-ship missiles, and mines. Forty-six of the bombers serve in the strategic nuclear role, equipped to carry the nuclear-tipped AGM-86B air-launched cruise missile (ALCM). It’s unknown if any of the B-52s deployed to RAF Fairford are considered nuclear-capable.
