Astronauts aboard the International Space Station had to take emergency shelter in a docked Soyuz spacecraft on Thursday morning.
The station was threatened by rapidly approaching space debris originating from a Russian weather satellite.
Typically, such threats are known well in advance and there’s time to move the facility out of harm’s way.
However, that wasn’t the case this time and their best means of protection was to wait inside the capsule.
Thankfully, the fragments whizzed past the station and no harm was done.
After about 10 minutes the crew was able to return to the ISS.
This is the 4th time such emergency measures have had to be taken.
The events shed light on the problem of space debris at large and how they from time to time they behave unpredictably.
There are approximately a half of a million pieces of junk currently in orbit.
